Autism Poop Happens
By Shane on Jun 7, 2010 | In Announcements | 1 feedback »
Don't be scarred (or scared) by the title of this blog post. It's a fact about autism and specifically it's one way how ASD affects our son, Braden. Let me get specific. Some kids with autism don't want to poop. Others don't want to poop in the toilet. And still others can't stop pooping. Our son wants to hold it in as long as possible, until he's practically crowning, and then he cautiously walks down the hall and into the bathroom looking like he just got back from a long horse ride. Can you picture it? Tip toes and all. As if walking flat footed would apply too much pressure and he'd accidentally have a serious accident 6 feet away from the bowl.
Shoes for Autism Service Dog?
By Shane on Jun 2, 2010 | In Announcements | 3 feedbacks »
We got shoes for Braden's autism service dog. That's a big deal and I now think that every service animal should have them. I'll explain why in a minute. But first I'll point out that we don't put the shoes on the dog for attention. The shoes are not intended to draw people's eyes to the lovely brown pooch at my side. Why is she at my side? Because my son isn't ready to walk her in public places yet, and at this point he'd prefer not to be strapped with that responsibility. He wants me to walk her, though I sometimes convince him to do it. Now, onto the shoes.
Autism Apps That Will Help You

Parents - Are you aware of the great autism apps available for iPhone and iPod Touch? These apps can be of tremendous help to you and your child with ASD. Apple devices are cool and the apps are pretty inexpensive once you get the device itself. (The way I'm going on here you'd think iOwnstockinthecompany. A little Apple humor. I couldn't resist!)
Let me paint you an example; If your child is non-verbal consider that purchasing an augmentative and alternative communication device like a DynaVox costs thousands of dollars. Then consider the iPod Touch with the smallest memory capacity will run you about $220 after tax. And that model will do you just fine. Then $10-$200 more for the appropriate apps. There's really no comparison when it comes to price. And functionality tends to be just as good. Did I mention how much cooler these little Apple devices are? Oh yeah!
not without me!
