the public school system

hello everyone out there! if you have a child with autism, there is no doubt that you probably received some sort of therapy services from your state. here in tennessee we have the tennessee early intervention services. it was wonderful and i have nothing but overwhelming gratitude for their help. however, in our state services end at the age of three. so what is the next step?
the majority of the therapist that worked with sir dantes have suggested that the next step is to enroll him into the public school system. here he would have access to services, such as speech therapy, that, by law, are provided for free by the state. logically it seems like the right thing to do. i went to the public schools and so did most of my friends. i have no bad memories of school, although i did not realize the lack of education i really received until i went to college. overall, school was fun. i had a lot of friends and participated in so many activities. but, i was not a special needs child.
reaching out

well, here it is...another monday evening. usually i get home from work, change into jammies, feed the children...you get the picture. we keep a fairly stringent schedule around our home. but tonight we ventured out and reached out at the same time.
we have been in a sort of limbo since sir dantes' therapies ended with t.e.i.s (tennessee early intervention services) when he turned three. in the back of our minds was a lingering question of "well, what do we do next?" there has been plenty of activity to help us not really concentrate on the lingering question, such as our big move into the new house (and the big flood last week). however, we weren't really sure where to start.
Birthday Number 8

May 3 was the day. And I think if Braden could speak he would tell us that he really had a good birthday. He was all smiles and happy dances. He gave his cake a lot of attention too. It was a motocross theme and standing in the frosting was a motocross bike with its rider. He knew what was going on. As soon as he woke up in the morning Mom and I told him, "Happy birthday!" and he was 8 now and we were having a party for him that night. So he knew. He was aware.
But before the cake and party it was off he went to school.
color time

good evening all!
i have new progress to report with sir dantes. he is finally wanting to color! in a coloring book!!! this is just fantastic news.
it may seem like a small thing to most people. after all, most children start wanting to color at a very young age, well before the age of three, and they will color on anything from paper to floors to walls. i can remember with ms. maxie the frustration of telling her over and over to only color on the paper. well, with sir dantes i just have been frustrated over the thought he'd never be interested in coloring.
